About me

I'm 34 and a science nerd turned high school English teacher (crazy, right?). I'm a Louisiana girl, but now I live in the burbs of Houston with my 2 funny little wiener dogs. I started this journey to a healthier life almost 6 months ago after I came back from a 3 week trip to Italy & Portugal...I decided I didn't want to be a fat American anymore. I'm no longer going to be that person that lets my weight hold me back from living the life I want.

I'm a nature girl and love doing anything outdoors (I definitely don't mind getting muddy!). I like living on the coast but I could definitely use some mountains and better beaches! I aspire to be not only a better runner, but also to be a well rounded athlete. One day I think it would be awesome to do a sub-30 5K, so I will just keep working at it until I get it done! I also have my sights set on a sprint triathlon in my area next spring. The key for me is staying active, and since I get bored easily I'm always trying new things!

I'm just a regular person who decided to make a change. I've lost 30 pounds and have 75 to go to get to my goal weight (as of April 1st). I'm learning to love myself more and accept my body for what it is, instead of wishing it was something else. I'm not perfect but I do my best to eat healthy and find balance with it because I don't believe any magic pill or quick fix is the right thing for me. I am changing my life, not living on a diet. Sometimes it has been harder and slower than I thought it would be, but I try to just keep plugging away, knowing that eventually I will get there. I'm stronger and happier than I have been in a long time, and really that is all I can ask for!

Thanks so much for letting me share my story with you. I'm so thankful to have met so many wonderful people working on improving their lives...the power of community is amazing! :)

I'll be adding a little bit more about myself along the way...stay tuned!

  1. I just came across your blog, Jamie and I am thankful I did! I am presently doing the Couch to 5K program and trying real hard to "embrace" running - and .... I'm actually starting to enjoy it! :) I am going to cyber stalk you for support and inspiration - hope that's ok :) I am from Alberta, CANADA and have a 10K coming up in May!

  2. Like your blog and its title. I, like you, had a very difficult situation I my life, and had to deal with it. I became crystal clear to me the world doesn’t stop and life goes on no matter how much I suffer. Whether it’s suffering from pain, injustice, loss or anything else, we have to try to be strong and keep going. Nobody will do it for us. Knowing that life will not be that bad forever helps. Nobody is that “lucky”.
As to the lighter subjects, weight loss and running are my issues, too. I started dealing with my excessive weight. I also fell in love with running. I learned that weight loss is doable and there are ways to make it easier. Running is fantastic and allows me to do things I never thought it was possible.
Good luck to you with both.
